Website health check for your Squarespace site
Squarespace sites usually look excellent and are usually built well. The problems we find are quieter than that — settings inherited from a template that nobody revisited.
What we check
The same checks we run on any site, plus the ones that matter particularly on Squarespace.
Titles inherited from the site-wide format
Squarespace builds page titles from a template like
%p — %s. It works, until every page ends up as “About — Business Name” with nothing that says what the page is for or where you are.Descriptions left empty
Squarespace does not require one, and the field sits in a panel most people open once. Empty means Google writes its own from your page text.
Pages sitting in Not Linked
Squarespace’s “Not Linked” section is genuinely useful for drafts — and a common place for a real page to be forgotten, unreachable from your navigation and effectively invisible.
Password-protected and hidden pages still expecting traffic
A page set to hidden while it was being written, then launched without the setting being changed.
What the page looks like after rendering
Squarespace assembles a good deal of the page in the browser. We check the rendered result rather than the raw file, so headings built by a block are seen the way Google sees them.
Image alt text and file weight
Squarespace templates are image-heavy by design. Missing alt text and oversized images are the two findings we raise most often on this platform.
How fixes are delivered
| Fix type | Where it goes in Squarespace |
|---|---|
| Page title and description | Pages → hover the page → gear icon → SEO tab |
| Site-wide title format | Settings → SEO → Search engine description and the title formats |
| Hide or show a page in search | Page gear icon → SEO → Hide this page from search engines |
| Move a page out of Not Linked | Pages → drag the page from Not Linked into your main navigation |
| Image alt text | Click the image block → Design/Edit → Image alt text |
| Headings | Select the text → choose Heading 1 for the main heading, Heading 2 for sections |
| Business address and hours | Settings → Business Information |

Squarespace’s menus change over time. If a path doesn’t match what you see, tell us and we’ll correct it in your report and on this page.
The Squarespace pattern
Squarespace customers rarely have a broken site. They have a site where the visible half was designed with care and the invisible half was left at the template default.
That is a specific and fixable situation, and it is why our reports on Squarespace tend to be short. Six or seven findings, most of them a sentence of text each, and the score moves a long way.
The title format trap, explained
Squarespace lets you set one title pattern for the whole site — typically the page name, a dash, then your business name. It is a sensible default and it is why so many Squarespace sites have titles like “Services — Coastal Dental”.
The problem is that “Services” tells a search engine nothing. Nobody types “services”. They type “dentist in Dieppe” or “emergency dental Moncton”. A title that does not contain what you do or where you are is a title working against you, however tidy it looks.
The fix is per page, in the SEO tab, and we write each one for you.
What we cannot do here
We cannot make changes inside your Squarespace account. There is no way for us to do that without your login, and we will not ask for it.
Every fix therefore arrives as text plus a path — the table above — and you paste it. We are explicit about this because “we’ll handle your SEO” is a phrase that usually means somebody wants your password.
Not Linked deserves its own paragraph
It is a good feature that quietly costs businesses traffic. Pages you built, finished, and never dragged into the navigation stay in Not Linked — reachable only by the exact URL, absent from your menu, and often never crawled.
We list every one of them we find, along with whether Google has indexed it, so you can decide whether each is a draft you forgot or a page you meant to launch.
What we don't promise
- No ranking guarantees. Nobody controls Google's rankings. Anyone who guarantees you the top spot is making it up.
- No overnight results. Google has to re-crawl your site after a fix. That takes days or weeks, not hours.
- We don't write your content. We fix what stops Google reading your site. We can't fix a site that has nothing to say.
- No keyword or backlink research. That's not this product. If that's what you need, our comparison pages say which tool to buy instead.
